Pune: A 16-year-old girl died after falling off the fifth floor balcony of a building in Pimpri Chinchwad on Wednesday around 10.30 am. The incident occurred when the deceased identified as Nikita Chandrakant Nisargand, was putting out clothes to dry in the balcony of their fifth floor flat. She was alone at home when the incident happened and she allegedly slipped that led to a loss of balance resulting in the fall. She recieved severe head injuries and was rushed to Pimpri's YCM Hospital where she was declared dead by doctors.
The deceased along with her family had recently moved to the city from Chikhli, a small village in the outskirts of Pune. She was studying in ninth grade at KG Chawla School in Chinchwad. She was the eldest among four younger siblings—two brothers and two sisters. Her mother works as a domestic maid in the area. The incident took place in the house that was allotted to the family in June under the PCMC's housing scheme for the economically weaker sections(EWS) called the Gharkul Prakalp Housing Society.
Meanwhile, following the incident, Sulabha Ubale, Shiva Sena group leader at Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) alleged that Gharkul Prakalp housing society failed to meet basic safety requirements despite repeated requests by Ubale. She claimed that they had written a letter to the PCMC board earlier requesting them to install safety measures for the buildings structure and its terraces and has again sent them a letter on the same after this accident.
