Since the last few days, a strange sight is being witnessed in Guruwar Peth. Every morning, scores of residents can be seen ferrying buckets of water from public taps in the area.

The reason - water taps in homes of most Guruwar Peth residents is spewing black-coloured contaminated water. While there is water shortage in other areas, for these residents times are even harder.

DNA had reported on August 25, 2012, about the plight of the residents living in Ghorpade Peth and Guruwar Peth, as they were getting contaminated water. The civic body had repaired the pipeline and the problem was solved.

However, it seems that the problem has recurred in the area. People living in Khyber Corner Society in Shitaladevi Chowk are worst hit as 18 residents of the society have complained of getting contaminated water in their houses.

Kiran Mohite, one of the residents, said, “We are getting black and yellow coloured water through our water taps. Initially, we thought that the water tank of the society is not clean. Hence, we carried out clean up work of the water tank. But still we are getting contaminated water.”

Shafiq Sayyed, another resident, said, “The water we are getting at our house has a foul odour and causing stomach aches. We are not able to use it and have to procure water from other areas.”

Avinash Kamathe, junior engineer of Pune Municipal Corporation, said, “I received a call from the residents about the contaminated water supply. We will be repairing it by Monday.”
