The arrested senior officials of the examination department of the University of Pune (UoP) are being treated in a ‘respectful manner’ during the investigation.
The arrest of the deputy registrar Rajendra Pandit and head of the re-evaluation department Lalsingh Wasve have raised eyebrows in the police force and at the varsity.
“The suspects are senior officials at the varsity and not hardcore criminals. Hence, we have to treat them in an appropriate manner. Moreover, since they are scared, we cannot interrogate them like any other criminal. Besides, they are co-operating with us,” said sources at the Chatuhshrungi police station.
The investigators also claim that the senior officials had an idea of their possible arrest in the scam.
Speaking to DNA, Mahesh Bolkotgi, investigatiing officer and assistant police inspector of Chatuhshrungi police station, said, “After the earlier arrest of Ramesh Kisan Shelar (43), Ashok Shankarrao Ranwade (44) and Chetan Gajanan Parbhane (38), the officials had an idea about their possible arrest. They had already informed their family members about it as they had signed on their certificates in the past,” he said.
A team of policemen from Chatuhshrungi police station swooped down at the examination department on Saturday and arrested the suspects. “After the arrest, we recorded their statements. During the interrogation, the suspects repented of their deeds. Some cried as well,” said an investigator.
