As the news of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray’s death spread on Saturday, shops and offices in the city pulled down shutters as a mark of respect. Besides Shiv Sena party offices in the city, roads in all parts of the city were deserted.
Business went on as usual all over the city till afternoon. However, as soon as the news of Thackeray’s demise broke, Shiv sainiks closed down their offices across the city. Kothrud, which is considered the stronghold of Sena, wore a deserted look soon after.
Shops in areas like Anandnagar, Ideal Colony, Dahanukar Colony, Rambaug Colony, Gujarat Colony and Kothrud depot also shut shop. Shiv Sainiks gathered outside Sena offices to pay homage to the party chief.
Busy market areas such as Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road and Tilak Road, which were buzzing with people till afternoon, suddenly turned empty, as shopkeepers closed down their shops.
Shops in Vishrantwadi were also closed down.
Fergusson College Road and Jungli Maharaj Road, which are usually crowded, were deserted on Saturday. Restaurants in these areas were also closed down.
