Ajit Dattu Mane (43) of Vishrantwadi Alandi Road died of dengue at Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) acting medical officer of health Dr ST Pardeshi said that the cause of death of Mane, the seventh victim to vector borne illness since October, was septicemia with dengue positive.
Meanwhile, as many as 56 new cases were reported in the city on Wednesday. This is the highest figure recorded on a single day ever since the transmission of dengue fever started increasing in the city from September.
In the last week alone, a whopping 186 cases were reported taking the total number to 655 since January this year.
Sporadic cases of other vector-borne diseases like malaria and chikungunya too were reported over the past week. While seven people fell sick due to malaria, four have been diagnosed with chikungunya since November 1.
Civic officials say that most dengue cases are being reported from areas like Wadgaonsheri, Pune-Nashik Road, Bopodi, Chandannagar, Kothrud and peth areas.
“While civic officials are conducting house-to-house surveys, it is important for citizens to ensure there aren’t mosquito breeding spots in residential areas. People should keep their houses clean, avoid stagnation of fresh water, dispose waste properly and cover water containers while storing water,” said Pardeshi.
