Having reached the last leg of the investigation, CBI is busy trying to establish a link between the IB and Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, the alleged militant killed in the fake encounter along with Ishrat Jahan and two others.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had learnt that Javed was an Intelligence Bureau operative. Sources said he was in Nashik with his wife and two kids at the house of his wife’s sister. According to sources, he had gone to Nashik from Pune on June 10, 2004, after getting a call from the Gandhinagar office of the IB — the office of IB special director Rajendra Kumar — on his phone.

The CBI has found that Javed had spoken to Kumar, who told him to come to Ahmedabad immediately. Confirming that he would, Javed even gave the IB officer the details of his vehicle.

“Once Javed confirmed his visit, a call was allegedly made to a Gujarat Police officer from Kumar’s official number,” sources said. The CBI believes that Kumar might have informed the cops about Javed’s plan.

CBI has further learnt that after confirming his plan, Javed called up Ishrat, who was living in Mumbai. Both of them knew each other as Javed had worked with her father for a while in Mumbai. “She came to Nashik from Mumbai the next day,” sources revealed. They left Nashik around 10 in the morning of June 11, 2004.

Sources said a team of IB sleuths was following them from Nashik and updating the police about their movement. “They were eventually picked up by the police from Vasad near Vadodara,” a source said.

In her report, the first investigating officer in the Ishrat case, Parikshita Rathod, stated that Javed and Ishrat had stayed at a hotel in Bardoli and left on June 12, 2004 – a theory that the CBI sleuths have refused to buy.

The CBI is all set to tighten the screws on Kumar on the basis of this investigation and mention the details in the final report.
