About 1,000 Sikhs of Ahmedabad on Sunday brought out a rally, protesting delay in justice to victims of Anti-Sikh riots of 1984. They were led by journalist-turned-social activist, Jarnail Singh, who in the past had made national headlines for hurling a shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram during a press conference in New Delhi.

The protest walk started from Gobind Dham Gurudwara on SG Road and culminated at Thaltej Crossroads. Elaborating on the event, Singh said: “Like in Gujarat (Godhra riots of 2002), we want a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe and monitor Anti-Sikh riots of 1984… We want to create pressure on different governments for justice.”

It’s high time justice was delivered, believes Jasbir Singh Makhija – former president and currently a member of the Gurudwara. “Almost 29 years have passed since the tragic riots took place, but justice is yet to be delivered. We want to take the issue to the people,” said Makhija.
“The community, which always kept interests of the country first and was always at the front for the country, is still awaiting justice.” Makhija also said that they want CBI to challenge acquittal of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar in the matter.

Singh, during the protest, appeared agitated about the delay in justice. He talked about Gurbachan Singh, one fo the key witnesses in the case, and how his family members were burnt alive in the riots. “He is the only witness against Sajjan Kumar, and he has already undergone heart surgery twice. Are we waiting for him to die, so that there are no witnesses against Sajjan Kumar,” Singh asked.

The rally in Ahmedabad on Sunday was part of a series of nationwide stir for speeding up the process of justice. The cavalcade moves to Bareilly now. Vadodara is also on the protest radar.
