Waking up to the new form of protests engineered with the help of the social networking sites, Congress has decided to have a special session on ‘social media’ at its three-day Chintan Shivir beginning in Jaipur on Friday.

A young Congress politician, part of the Rahul Gandhi brigade, told DNA that the party wants to do some serious thinking on this new development which has left politicians as well as the bureaucrats awestruck because of  its sheer capacity to suddenly spring up an issue out of the blue and crowding any place with protesters in no time.

“Series of protests — from Anna Hazare’s movement for the Jan Lokpal bill to the unprecedented congregation of crowds to show solidarity for Delhi Gang rape victim —  has literally stumped everybody.  Despite best efforts by the government it took a herculean effort to manage each. The party thinks that this new phenomenon needs to be addressed,” said the politician, who is part of the Chintan Shivir.

There is thinking now within the Congress that the old guard is unable to deal with newer challenges of this sort as well other socio-economic realities and need young blood to understand the same for they would be able to understand what the Indian youth aspires for and why it does certain things in a certain manner.

The 150-odd young turks of the Congress under Rahul Gandhi are expected to have a brain storming session on social media.

They are expected to speak on their understanding of the social media – why it has become such a powerful tool and how the party can deal with it or use it for its benefit.

The session is also expected to deliberate on the role of the media, particularly the electronic media that at times aids the social media and sometimes blows relatively less significant things out of proportion forcing the government as well as the party to take positions.

Both Congress and the government of late have suffered humiliation because of gaffe done by politicians who failed to react properly on a sudden development and situation. This too, Congress thinks, needs to be corrected and learnt by its leaders.
