Ketan Tirodkar, who is an accused in the Sadik Jamal fake encounter case, may be given a clean chit by the CBI. Sources close to the development said that though the probe agency has named eight accused in its chargesheet, it has not named Tirodkar. For this reason, there is a strong possibility that the probe agency may give him a clean chit, the sources said.

The CBI has resumed investigation in the case after a lull of two months. The sources further said that some high profile Mumbai police officers may be questioned soon. The CBI may arrest some high profile police officers by the end of next week, including some from Ahmedabad and Mumbai, the sources added.

The probe agency had earlier recorded Tirodkar’s statement under Section 164 of the CrPC, which implies that his statement shall have to be considered by the CBI either as an accused or as a witness.

“The CBI may consider him as a witness. This may put suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara and suspended DySP Tarun Barot, along with some police officers of Mumbai, in real trouble,” he said.

The sources further said that though the names of the police officers who are likely to be arrested have not been revealed, most of them are from Mumbai police. IA Saiyed and KM Vaghela, who were posted in detection of crime branch when the encounter took place, face the possibility of arrest, the sources said.

The CBI had registered a fresh FIR in the Sadik Jamal fake encounter case in June 2011 and had named police officers of Ahmedabad, Mumbai and central Intelligence Bureau as accused.
After the encounter, the DCB had said that Sadik was a Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist who had come to Ahmedabad to assassinate some top leaders of the BJP and the VHP.

However, his brother, Shabbir Jamal, had told the Gujarat HC that his brother was neither a LeT terrorist nor was he on way to Ahmedabad. He was detained by PSI Daya Nayak in Mumbai for many days before he was handed over to Ahmedabad police who killed him in a fake encounter.
