Women judges have played a major role in ensuring justice to victims of the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. The trial of six out of the 10 most sensational riot cases has been entrusted with women judges.

Sessions judge Jyotsnaben Yagnik, for instance, is hearing the Naroda Patiya case. More than 90 people were killed in Naroda Patiya area of Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002 by a mob of thousands of people. There are some high-profile accused in the case, including former minister Maya Kodnani, and some VHP leaders.

The trial in Sardarpura massacre case was also conducted by a woman, Judge SC Srivastava. She convicted 31 out of the 73 people accused of killing more than 30 people in Sardarpura village of Mehsana district, and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Judge Srivastava is also hearing another riot case — massacre in Dipda Darwaja area of Visnagar town in which 11 people were burnt to death during the 2002 riots.

The trial of the Ode massacre case in which 27 people were killed in three separate incidents, was conducted by  judge Poonam Singh. She pronounced the verdict in the main case on Monday. She acquitted 15 accused of another case arising out of the incident on March 2, 2002, in which an old man was burnt to death. She will also deliver the verdict in a third case — murder of three people in Malav Bhagol area of the same village during the riots.

Another woman judge, Getaben Gopi, is hearing the sensational case of murder of three British nationals. The trio were killed along with their driver during the riots near Prantij in Sabarkantha district.
