With the rising number of cases involving fake police officials, the city police along with city-based NGO Lok Rakshak Police Seva Samiti (LRPSS) have started a campaign to spread awareness about the issue.

The NGO kicked off a week-long drive with a rally from Ashram Road to Stadium Circle in the city on Monday. The campaigners put up banners and distributed pamphlets at all major areas of the city thus spreading awareness about fake police.

The police put up these banners at all the 38 police stations, 119 police chowkis and 163 traffic police points in the city to alert citizens to make them aware of fake cops. Some 190 religious places including temples, mosques, among others as well as all the major residential complexes and societies will be covered under the campaign.

LRPSS has a 600-strong group of youngsters to carry out the campaign. “The real police officials are having a tough time with the constantly rising number of fake cop cases in the city,” said Prithvi Bhatt, president of LRPSS. He said the main purpose of the drive is to alert citizens about the burning issue of fake police officials.

In the past eight months, there have been over 1,000 cases involving fake cops, with 400 of them in the city alone. The police had cracked down on a Mumbai-based ‘Irani Gang’, who had been posing as fake policemen and arrested many of them some months ago. However, the gang has started operating again, which makes the drive against fake cops even more relevant now.
