Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has written to the Nanavati-Mehta commission with the request that he be provided documents and records of the state intelligence bureau (SIB) submitted to the commission by the state government.

Bhatt has sought the records so that he can file a comprehensive affidavit about the alleged misuse of public funds by the chief minister to derail the writ petition filed in the Supreme Court by Mallika Sarabhai.  She had filed the petition after the 2002 riots, seeking justice for the riot victims.

Bhatt has claimed that he is privy to how Modi and the then home minister Amit Shah had allegedly drawn, in April 2002, Rs10 lakh from the secret fund of the SIB to give it to lawyers. Bhatt’s letter is in connection with the commission rejecting Sarabhai's application demanding the recall of Bhatt as a witness in her case.

However, the probe panel had given Bhatt the freedom to file an affidavit in the case so that it can decide whether the matter fell within its purview.
