A 53-year-old man was arrested by the Tardeo police on Friday for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 23-year-old daughter in law- Laxmi Kalwar at her Tardeo home. Her parents allege that she was being mentally and physically harassed for dowry of Rs2 lakh.

“Ramphevar Kalwar, resident of Mulund, has been booked under section 498 (a) - (dowry death) and 306 (Abetment to commit suicide) and 34 (Common intention) IPC and has been remanded to police custody till December 20 by the Holiday court on Saturday,” said inspector Deepak Patil of Tardeo police station. A man hunt has been launched to nab his son, Om Prakash Kalwar, 26.

Dilip Jaiswal, 32, resident of Tulsiwadi at Tardeo said, “My younger sister Laxmi married Om in February 28 this year. Ten days ago, she left her hsuband’s home and came here saying that her husband and father-in-law had been physically and mentally harassing her for the last six months to bring Rs2 lakh to buy a new flat.”

The suicide took place at around 12.30pm on December 8 when Laxmi was alone at home. Dilip’s wife, Leelwati had gone out to bring her son from school while his mother Nirmala Devi was at their grocery shop. Laxmi took a saree and hanged herself from the ceiling. When Nirmala Devi returned home, she saw the body and started screaming for help. Laxmi was then rushed to the Nair Hospital where she was declared dead before admission, said Jaiswal who lodged a complaint against the Kalwar family at Tardeo police station.

Jaiswal said that besides cash Rs1 lakh, they had given a gold chain, a gold ring, refrigerator, television set,  steel cupboard, gifts and utensils to Om after the wedding. On the engagement, on October 9, 2010, they gave him Rs60,000 and a gold ring.
