Anna Hazare's movement for a Jan Lokpal to curb corruption in the country has given political parties an opportunity a platform through which they can increase their popularity among the people. And the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is no exception.

With elections to Gujarat assembly due next year, the BJP's student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), is active in the state in support of Hazare's crusade. The ABVP has constituted a group named, 'Youth Against Corruption' (YAC), to connect to the youths of the state on this issue.

YAC members have been sending SMSes and e-mails inviting youths of the state to join their group. They are also working through social networking websites to attract youths to Anna's movement. Not only that. Big billboards inviting people to join the YAC have sprung up across the state.

The state BJP's youth cell is also active to connect youths of the state to Anna's movement which is currently at loggerheads with the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.

On Tuesday evening, the youth cell had taken out a candlelight march in Vejalpur in support of Anna. It also gave a call for a bandh of schools and colleges on Thursday.

"It is time to grab the attention of as many people as possible and mobilise them against the Congress party. This will get the BJP many new voters," an ABVP leader said.

Publicly, however, the ABVP is denying that it has a political agenda in backing Anna's movement. "Youths Against Corruption (YAC) is an extended forum of the ABVP. It was created on May 12. The Parishad is active in educational institutions and only students and teachers can participate in its activities," Darshan Gunjal told DNA.

He said the issue of corruption is not limited to students and teachers. "That is why we have created 'Youths Against Corruption' which is a forum where everybody can join the battle against graft," Gunjal said. Pradipsingh Waghela, president of BJP's youth cell, said that the ABVP is with people's campaign and it supports all those who fight corruption.
