Former Gujarat DGP, K Chakravarthy, who recently said that IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was not present at the meeting held at the chief minister's residence on February 27, 2002, had pleaded amnesia before Nanavati-Shah commission in 2004. This is revealed by a record of his deposition released by the Jan Sangarsh Manch (JSM) at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Chakravarthy, who had recorded his statement before the commission on August 17, 2004, clearly said that he did not even remember whether the then minister of state for home Gordhan Zadaphia and BJP leader IK Jadeja were present at the meeting.

He could only recall that the then Ahmedabad police commissioner, PC Pande, was present in the meeting held at the chief minister's house on February 27, 2002.

Jan Sangharsh Manch has written to the Nanavati-Mehta commission to summon Sanjiv Bhatt so that Chakravarthy's statement could be crosschecked. Bhatt has mentioned in his affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on April 14, 2011, that Chakravarthy was present in the meeting. A cross-examination of Bhatt could prove who was correct, the JSM said.

In his affidavit, Bhatt had stated that he was asked by Chakravarthy to be present in the meeting to handle intelligence related queries.

Bhatt has further stated that, from the Police Bhavan, he had gone to the chief minister's house in Chakravarthy's car and had attended the meeting which lasted around 20 minutes.

However, in his statement given before Nanavati-Shah commission in 2004, Chakravarthy did not say anything about Bhatt being present at the meeting as he had pleaded amnesia.
"Chakravarthy was not able to recall the details of the meeting in the year 2004, which was just two years after the meeting. But now after nine years of the meeting, he can recall Bhatt's absence," Mukul Sinha, convenor, JSM, told reporters during the press conference on Tuesday.

Sinha also said that the only thing that Chakravarthy remembered, according to his statement before the commission, was that the CP of Ahmedabad was present in the meeting. He had said nothing about Bhatt's absence, Sinha said.
