The central bureau of investigation (CBI) is all set to solve the mystery of the third person who was reportedly taken off a Hyderabad-Nasik bus in Sangli in November 2005 by a team of the Gujarat police. This third person was travelling with Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife, Kauserbi, when the trio were picked up from the bus and taken to Ahmedabad.

The CBI has begun investigations in the Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case after the Supreme Court handed over the case to it on April 8 this year. Before that, the case was being investigated by the state CID (crime) which had held that the third person travelling with Sohrabuddin and his wife was one Kalimuddin from Hyderabad. The CBI, on the other hand, believes that the third person was Prajapati, a close aide of Sohrabuddin, who had helped identify Sohrab to the Gujarat police team.

Sources close to the CBI said sleuths of the probe agency had started gathering and analysing the evidence on the Prajapati case. The sources said the central agency believes that Prajapati was convinced he too would be killed in an encounter because he knew too much about the Sohrabuddin's fake encounter.

"The CBI has no doubt that Prajapati was killed because he knew a lot about the Sohrab encounter and was an important witness," a source said.

Sources in the state CID, however, continue to insist that it was not Prajapati who was picked up from the Nasik-bound bus in which Sohrabuddin and his wife were travelling. He was, in fact, already in Valsad where he was detained by the local police. Suspended IPS officer Abhay Chudasma was posted there at the time.

"Sohrabuddin, Kausarbi and the third person were brought to Valsad and, from there, Prajapati was taken to Udaipur (in Rajasthan), and Sohrabuddin and Kausarbi were taken to Ahmedabad. The third person was sent back to Hyderabad," a source said. Prajapati, who was taken to Udaipur jail, was brought to Ahmedabad regularly till he was killed in another fake encounter in December 2006, the source added.

Sources close to the CBI, however, said that the central agency does not accept that Prajapati was already present in Valsad before Sohrabuddin and his wife were brought there. "The agency will leave no stone unturned to find out the truth and will check all possibilities - of Prajapati being in the Nasik-bound bus as well as the possibility of his being in Valsad," a source said.
