The special investigation team appointed by the Gujarat high court to investigate the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case will submit its interim report in the high court on Thursday.

The probe team will submit the report to the registrar of the high court. Sources in the Ishrat SIT said that, contrary to reports, it had submitted no report in the court in the last few days. The report contains the findings of the investigation done by the probe team so far, the sources said.

The Ishrat SIT has recorded the statements of many policemen - from the rank of constable to the rank of deputy superintendent of police. According to sources, statements revealing vital links between the Ishrat Jahan encounter case and other cases and persons (including Raju Jeerawala) had allegedly been recorded by the probe team.

Earlier, a raid on the Ahmedabad office of the Forensic Science Laboratory was also conducted by IGP Satish Verma and his junior colleague, assistant commissioner of police VR Tolia. Verma is one of the three members of the Ishrat SIT.

There was a furore after the duo raided the FSL-Ahmedabad. Despite much effort by the officials of the FSL, no police action could be taken against the SIT officials.

Meanwhile, sources said that it would be difficult for IPS officer Karnal Singh, who has been transferred to Mizoram to visit Gujarat regularly for the investigation. Singh is an officer in the Delhi police and is head of the Ishrat SIT. The third member of the probe team is the Gujarat cadre IPS officer Mohan Jha.
