Pope moves an inch on contraception

The statement by Pope Benedict XIV, in his new book, that the use of condoms is acceptable in some cases, marks a major shift in the Catholic Church’s stand on anything that resembles contraception. This is a breakthrough which Aids workers, health professionals and, to some extent, women’s rights activists will support. Religion is a guiding light in the lives of many and when a religious principle conflicts with newer realities, there is not just confusion but also imminent danger.

However, while it is evident that the threat of Aids has reached the Vatican, the rest of the 21st century has been left out. The Catholic Church has been staunchly resistant to contraception of any kind, no matter what the dangers. It has been evident to many outside the church, including dissidents and, increasingly, believers, that the Vatican had to step up to the plate when it came to issues like contraception following its loss of face over child abuse scandals.

The Pope has mentioned both in his book. For millions of Catholics around the world, it can only be hoped that more action will follow.
