Taking a cue from the recent controversy surrounding Maria Sharapova and Sachin Tendulkar which had caused furore amongst Indians, Culture Machine's Being Indian channel came up with a video "Mumbai on Indian Sports Stars - BEING INDIAN!!" to gauge the everyday Mumbaikars knowledge of Famous Indian Sports icons.
Being Indian went on the streets of Mumbai, to ask the youngsters how much do they knew about Indian sporting legends. The interviewees had Mary Kom playing tennis, Leander Paes bowling on cricket fields and Abhinav Bindra being a part of the Indian Premier League. The wild guesses and surmises while answering go to show how much the Indian youth lack in the knowledge of any sport other than cricket.
This comes as a drastic contrast to the extreme reactions the Indians had on the Russian Tennis star Maria Sharapova's ignorance of who Sachin Tendulkar was. Ardent fans had taken offense to Sharapovas statement of "I don't know" who Sachin is and expressed their angst all over Twitter and Facebook. Topics "Who is Maria Sharapova" and "Sachin Tendulkar" had gone viral as fans put up memes and comments about the issue.
