World renowned conductor of western classical music Zubin Mehta, who is scheduled to perform at the National Centre for Performing Arts this March, is facing tax duty exemption problems.

The event is organised by the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, which has moved the Bombay high court.

The petitioners — who include filmmaker Shyam Benegal, industrialist Nusli Wadia, Dr Yusf Hamied, Zarine Billiomaria, and senior counsel Iqbal Chagla — have sought that the state exempt the show from paying entertainment duty. They also want the state to follow its government resolution of 1973 which exempts classical shows from paying duty.

The matter came up for hearing on Thursday before a division bench of justices DK Deshmukh and KK Tated. The bench has directed the ministry of culture to decide on the organisers’ application before February 14.

The petitioners have claimed that there has been no reply from the state government because of which the issuing of passes and tickets has been delayed.

The performances scheduled to be held on March 30 and 31 will feature Mehta and performances by Maggio Musicale Florentino Orchestra. The proceeds of the show will be used for public charitable purposes.

“We will check whether the show can be exempted from paying entertainment duty. A decision will accordingly be taken by February 14,” said D Nalawade, government pleader.
