While it is always known that even non-Christians celebrate Christmas by visiting their friends, a different trend is emerging from the last four to five years. Housing societies that have an equal number or sizable number of non-Christians are making it a routine to have Christmas celebrations in their societies. And if they are not able to make it, residents seek places where they can enjoy Christmas too.

Sameer Vyas, who lives in Vaibhav Co-operative Housing Society on Holy Cross Road at IC Colony in Borivili, is one such individual.

“Each member contributes some amount and we ensure that everyone in the building tries to come for the celebrations. The idea is that people celebrate it together while they also make it a point to mingle with people from the building,” Vyas said.

Vyas said that to ensure that no one feels left out, the delicacies and goodies that are a part of any Christmas party includes vegetarian food too. “We serve both, vegetarian and non- vegetarian food, so that people who do not have Christmas specialities like Sorpotel or chicken can enjoy as well. We also have popular Bollywood music for people to dance,” added Vyas.

While his society makes it a point to celebrate with the residents, people like Nitin Mayekar of LIC colony make it a point to go to party elsewhere. “In my locality people are no so keen. So I make it a point to go to a place where they provide for good and drinks,” said Mayekar, adding that for the night, he had bought a coupon for his family of three for a place where food and drinks would be available for Rs3,000.
