At the age of 14 and 16, when most kids were poring over books and preparing for board exams, Dhruv and Divisht were busy snipping hair and learning the technical know-how of haircutting and styling.
It’s their passion for hairdressing thathas gone on to make the brothers the youngest certified and trained professional hairdressers at the L’Oreal International Hairdressing Academy, Mumbai. While 21-year-old Dhruv also became the youngest to be hired as a trainer at the academy at the mere age of 17, 16-year-old Divisht became the youngest certified professional hairdresser at just 14.
“I had just given my class X board exams and during the holidays began frequenting the salon of my mother (Sanndhya Chandra, a trained hair professional) and managing it. My key role was to manage the staff and the customers and I enjoyed the experience and realised it was my calling and the career I wanted to pursue," says Dhruv.
Discovering his interest in the field, Dhruv quit education to follow his heart and soon joined the academy at the age of 16.
“On the completion of my six-month course, I was approached to become a trainer at the academy, a position unthinkable for a young student,” says Dhruv.
After learning hairstyling tips from renowned stylists and hairdressers like Guy Kremer, Jo Hanford and Bertram Kainzer whom he assisted during their visits to the academy, now Dhruv himself frequents salons across cities like Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata, sharing his expertise and training teams on the new trends in the hairstyling industry.
Divisht too knew his calling at the age of 13. “I used to often visit the academy and kept insisting to the course co-ordinator to enrol me even though they didn’t have provisions for students at such a young age,” chuckles Divisht. Noticing his constant presence at the academy and his penchant for hairdressing and eagerness to learn, the academy finally relented and enrolled him as one of its youngest students.
Today, he is not only the youngest certified professional hairdresser, he is also the creative director of Drama Salon and Spa (R City Mall, Ghatkopar), begun by the duo.
“Hairdressing gives me the perfect platform to showcase my creative abilities,” says Divisht. So, while Dhruv as Drama’s art director brings newer techniques to the floor and gives his customer’s the latest look, Divisht focuses on colour patterns and techniques.
With British hairdresser Trevor Sorbie as their role model, the duo is aiming high.
