We have adopted two stray dogs in our building and we take good care of them. They are great, and they play the role of the watchmen while our [human] guards are snoring.
I try to help the WSD with its work whenever I find the time. But I am very scared of visiting the shelter; I can't bear to see dogs in pain.
People do adopt stray dogs, but sometimes, the reaction of people to strays is abysmal. Ideally, residents should take responsibility for the dogs in their lane. The media, too, should take a more humane approach, and not portray strays as horrible and poisonous creatures.
And as far as some people who only want to keep selected breeds of dogs, it's only a question of ego. It is more like an extension of themselves. How can anyone be a selective dog lover? You either love them or you don't.
