Christmas was the coolest day in Mumbai this year, brining the much-needed chills to the sultry city. The weather might not change much for the next five days, the Indian meteorological department has said. For the next two days, the weather inSouth Mumbai is predicted to be partly cloudy.

The chilly weather is attributed to the cold wave in the western region, which comes from the Himalayas. “This happens every year,” said Ashok Borse, the deputy director general of the Mumbai weather bureau.

Temperatures have dipped in Belapur, Thane district and Navi Mumbai too. “At nights especially, it’s really breezy. Our winter clothes are out,” said Kankan Chaudhary from Belapur in Navi Mumbai. While the temperature in Nashik is around 6-7 degrees, the minimum temperature was 19.9o Celsius at Colaba and 14.8o Celsius at Santacruz.

“The temperature in Santa Cruz is lower because it is landlocked. Colaba is warmer because it’s closer to the sea,” said Borse. He added, “The rise in carbon emission levels over the last three years has resulted in the weather not getting as cold as it should be.”
The department says that Mumbai is still not feeling the cold that is being experienced in Pune and Nashik. “That’s because Mumbai is comparatively protected due to the Sahyadri range,” said another official at the Mumbai weather bureau.

According to Borse, the lack of rains this year has been responsible for a delayed and warmer December. “We did not have very good monsoons this year. Just when we predicted a good cloud development over the Arabian Sea, there was a depression in the Bay of Bengal, which pulled away all the moisture from the sea,” explained Borse.
