The railway police on Monday found the dead body of an unidentified woman wrapped in a bed sheet in the luggage compartment of a local train. The woman is said to have been about 20-25 years old.

Deputy commissioner of police (Western Railway) Anil Tamaychekar said that an unclaimed piece of luggage wrapped in a bed sheet was found around 6.30am in the train standing at platform 3 of Churchgate station. The loaders were informed, and they got it off the train.

There was no claimant till 7.30am. The loaders then removed the bed sheet and found dead body. “The woman was five feet tall, had a dark complexion and long hair. We have also found seven tops, seven lehengas and salwars, one petticoat and three dupattas from the same luggage. We believe that the woman could have been in the business of buying and selling old clothes,” said Tamaychekar.

He added that a panchnama was done, and the body was sent to GT hospital. “There were strangulation marks on her neck and abrasions on her back and elbows. We are waiting for the post-mortem report, which will reveal the exact cause of death. We have also asked the doctors if she was raped before being murdered,” he said.

The police have formed six squads, of which one is solely for the purpose of checking the CCTV footages of cameras installed at all stations from Virar to Churchgate. A case of murder, causing disappearance of evidence, and giving false information to screen offender has been registered with the Churchgate railway police station.
