Bridging the gap between Indian and Vietnamese corporations and students, the Xavier’s Institute of Management and Research (XIMR) at Fort has started a Centre for Indo-Vietnam Studies, in collaboration with the Singapore Informatics and Business Management Education (SIBME).
The centre will initially cater to XIMR students pursuing their masters in management studies and give them an opportunity to work for two months in Vietnam. Its facilities will also be offered to corporate houses and professionals. “Vietnam occupies a key place in India’s foreign policy initiatives such as Engage East Policy. India has also signed a free trade agreement with ASEAN. Bilateral trade between the two is expected to exceed the figure of $7 billion by 2015, said Father Paul Vaz, director general of XIMR.
“We want to be an apex body of academics to develop courses and research here that will lead to a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of both countries,’’ he added.
During the two-month internship, students will get a chance to live with Vietnamese families, carry out immersion studies, and get a glimpse of the culture and business etiquette.
“Both countries share a very old relationship, which is now growing thanks to diplomats and trade. But, people still lack understanding of each other’s cultures. This centre will bring the two nations together,’’ said SK Nair, general director of SIBME.
GD Agarwal, president of the Indo-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, said that both countries would mutually benefit from this collaboration. “Vietnam is very good at manufacturing using the latest equipment, while Indians are good at project planning. A combination would make both these countries a force to reckon with,’’ he said.
