Pune mayor, Mohansingh Rajpal, agreed to form a women’s committee to address their safety issues. He made the announcement at an event organised by Metropolis Women International Network (Pune branch) and Smile and Alert in the city on Friday.

“There can be a gender cell to address issues of women and equality and also carry out gender audits,” said Rajpal. He appealed to women empowerment groups present at the venue to select women from their groups and stand for elections.

The event was organised to release a charter of demands for making Pune a part of ‘women friendly cities’, an initiative by Metropolis Women International Network. Municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) city president Vandana Chavan were present.

Pathak said, “It is important that women candidates stand for elections as only they can fully understand the problems faced by them.”

He admitted that the quality of sanitation facilities in the city are not up to the mark He promised to ensure that 5% budget allocated for women is carried out properly and implemented in a short time frame.

Chavan said, “Till recently, Pune was considered the safest place for women, but that is not the case anymore. All of us need to come together and pressurise the authorities to come up with solutions and ensure that it is implemented.”

The event also felicitated Centre for Development, Planning and Research’s Manaswini Prabhune; advocate Chetan Gandhi; Aalochana head Medha Kotwal and town planner Aneeta Benninger.
