The family of Kusum Paritosh Tiwari (29), who died at KEM Hospital at Parel on Friday evening, hold the hospital authorities responsible for Kusum’s death.

Her relatives suspect that Kusum, who was getting treated for lung problems, didn’t die due to her illness but because she fell from the bed in the hospital ward due to negligence. The authorities have refuted the charges.

Kusum was admitted to KEM hospital on Thursday, October 27 after feeling uneasy. The doctors advised her to get admitted to get a lung problem treated, following which Kusum had recovered slightly on Friday.

Paritosh left the hospital at 4pm on Friday to get Kusum food from his Wadala home.

A while after he left the hospital, he got a call telling him that there was an emergency and that he had to come back. On reaching the hospital, he found Kusum dead.

When he asked about the cause of her death, the hospital staff told him that she had fallen from her bed, and died due to a head injury.

“The doctor had assured me that Kusum was okay and would be discharged from the hospital in about two days. It was the hospital’s responsibility to take care of her,” a distraught Paritosh said.

According to another relative of the patient, KEM doctors did not co-operate when it came to performing a post-mortem.

“When we went to the Bhoiwada police station, we were asked to bring the requisite papers from the hospital, which were given to us only after a lot of arguing. We then lodged a complaint against the hospital,” said the relative.

However, the hospital refuted allegations made by the patient’s family.

“She died because of septicaemia and pneumonia. She was suffering from the ailment for the last two-three years, and may have fallen off the bed for that reason,” said deputy dean Dr ND Bhosale. “But though she fell from the bed, she didn’t die because of that; the cause of death is natural,” he added.
