A woman commuter travelling in a reserved compartment of the Mumbai-bound Sourashtra Express was assaulted by a robber with a knife on Friday evening. He stole her purse containing Rs 4000 before jumping out of the train.
The train was running between Dadar and Mumbai Central stations when the incident occurred. The robber is reported to have jumped off when the train slowed down at the Mahalaxmi station.
Farhana Sidhu Singh, 26, who was being treated at Nair Hospital, said she had boarded S-3 coach of the train at Vapi on Friday to visit Mumbai to visit her younger sister at Tardeo. The train reached Dadar station at 7pm and almost all other passengers got off. Besides her, there was only one 25 to 27-years-old youth in the coach.
As the train headed for Mumbai Central, the youth approached her and suddenly gagged her using his hands. He then threatened her to kill her if she shouted for help and demanded her belongings. The assailant reportedly spoke in Hindi.
Singh mustered some courage and pushed him aside and screamed for help. In a fit of rage, the robber whipped out a knife and assaulted her. In an effort to fend him off, she sustained injuries on her left hand thumb and middle finger. However, she still did not hand over her purse containing cash Rs4000 to him.
The robber then hit her in the abdomen and snatched her purse. When the train slowed down at Mahalaxmi station, he jumped out escaped. When the train reached at Mumbai Central station at 7.15pm, she narrated the incident to the railway police who rushed to her Nair Hospital.
“The victim is stated to be out of danger now and we have registered a case of robbery,” said senior police inspector Bharat Kumar Rane. The police have drawn up
