Witnesses trash Saif Ali Khan’s self-defence plea

Saif Ali Khan’s troubles are far from over. The Colaba police claim to have foolproof evidence of the actor assaulting NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma and his father-in-law Raman Patel at Wasabi, a Japanese restaurant at the Taj Mahal Palace in South Mumbai, on Wednesday. Nearly 20 hours after the incident, Saif claimed he was hit first and that he merely acted in self-defence.

The police, however, have recorded the statements of the floor manager and staff at Taj, who said Saif hit the businessman first. This is likely to be the clinching evidence against the actor. “If there are two independent witnesses, it is more than enough for conviction,” said an officer from the Colaba police station.

“The staff at Taj told us that Saif and his two friends — businessman Shakeel Ladak and producer Bilal Amrohi — hit the complainant. They also confirmed that Saif attacked the complainant first,” the officer said.

The police also tried to get the statements of other guests dining at Wasabi when the incident took place, but were unsuccessful. However, they said they have other solid proof to nail Saif. The police also have Sharma’s medical report which confirms that his nose was fractured. “Doctors said it is possible to get such a fracture if one is punched hard in the face,” the officer said.

To ascertain whether Saif was under the influence of alcohol, the police got details of their bill at Wasabi.

“The bill came to Rs60,000 and they ordered one peg of whisky. But we don’t know if they were already drunk before coming to the Taj,” the officer said.

“Our investigations are on and we have enough evidence. I don’t want to reveal anything right now,” said Vinod Sawant, senior police inspector at the Colaba police station.
