A cabbie who was thrashed after he was caught trying to kidnap a child took revenge by running his vehicle over seven people, including two women, at Mahim. Five people sustained minor injuries while a 25-year-old youth is critical. The driver, yet to be identified, is on the run.

The incident took place at 1.40am on Wednesday when the driver tried to kidnap a six-year-old homeless girl from the footpath near the Senapati Bapat Marg in Mahim (West). One of the dwellers saw him lift the girl and alerted the others. The driver was beaten black and blue by four men and some women before he managed to flee in his taxi in the direction of SL Raheja hospital.

The people who thwarted the kidnapping attempt were discussing the incident on the road when barely five minutes later, the driver sped toward their direction and knocked them down. While fleeing from the spot, he also rammed into a biker, injuring him in the process.

Sisters Pooja Parmar, 17, and Geeta Parmar, 20, Aslam Shaikh, 26, and Lakshman Phoolmarwari, 26, sustained minor injuries while Bansi Chauhan, 25, is on ventilator at Bhabha hospital. “We are from Rajasthan and have been living in the city since 1984.

We earn our living by selling weaved baskets. That night, after we saw the driver trying to steal the baby, we caught hold of him and slapped him,” said Jeeva Chauhan, Bansi’s father. “After he fled from the spot, we thought the matter was over. But we were wrong. He returned to take revenge. He was under the influence of alcohol.”

The police have not registered a kidnapping case against the driver. “We have registered a case for attempt to murder. We have seized the vehicle used by him. The cabbie is absconding and we have launched a manhunt to trace him,” said Dashrath Patil, senior inspector at the  Mahim police station.
