Industries minister Narayan Rane and son Nitesh, president of Swabhiman Sanghatana, seem all set to spoil election plans of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Mumbai.

Sources said that Swabhiman will be contesting the polls in the wards given to the NCP by fielding independent candidates. The task assigned to these candidates is simple: defeat the NCP candidate.

The war between Congress’s Ranes and NCP is nothing new in state politics. NCP played an active role in Rane’s defeat in his hometown in Konkan in the recently held civic elections. Both will face each other again in the upcoming zilla parishad elections. Rane has even called for a rally in Kudal, Sindhudurg, today, which he has named ‘exposing NCP’.

However, Nitesh said that his only aim in these elections is to defeat Sena-BJP and prevent them from coming to power again. “I can’t comment on NCP right now. We are on a mission to expose the party in Konkan,” he said.

But the fight is far from being restricted to Konkan, and might just spill out in the BMC polls. “There are certain wards, such as 36, 189, which are given to the NCP, where Swabhiman has a considerable clout. We will contest from there. Victory is not the aim, defeating NCP is,” said another source close.

Besides these wards, Swabhiman will contest through its independent candidates in around 30 wards across the city. Out of these, 90% are being given to the NCP.
