Will Smita Thackeray’s Babri film ‘demolish’ netas responsible for riots?

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s daughter-in-law Smita Thackeray is all set to produce a film based on the Babri masjid demolition and the communal riots which followed.

"I was a witness to several happenings at that time. I also followed the politics surrounding the Babri controversy very closely. The communal riots which broke out were the most unfortunate,” said Thackeray while speaking with DNA.

But how will her film portray the Mumbai riots and allegations made against the Sena, considering that she is a member of the Thackeray family? “If I tell you everything about the film right now, nothing will be left to watch in the film. I can just tell you that the film portrays a common man and his point of view on the controversy,” Thackeray said.

She added that she has had the idea for the film for many years. “I discussed it with Aamir Khan, who provided powerful inputs for the film’s script. The script is ready, and I am looking forward to have Ajay Devgn play the lead role,” she said.

Thackeray wants her film to be ready for release before the final verdict in the Babri case, which is currently pending in the Supreme Court. “I want to complete my film before the verdict. I am only waiting to get dates from actors so we can start shooting immediately,” she said.

A film on such a sensitive subject by a member of the Thackeray family is likely to ruffle many feathers, especially at a time when the Supreme Court has asked the Sena chief to spell out his stand on a CBI plea for the restoration of criminal conspiracy charges against him in the demolition case.
