The police team investigating into the rape and murder of nine-year-old Nusrat Shaikh believes it can unlock the identity of the perpetrator with the help of a key found near the minor’s body on Saturday.

Police officials suspect the accused is a local, and are confident this key will help them locate his residence. They were spotted scouring the Vatsalatai Nagar locality with the key on Monday, as they tried it on the locks of each house one by one. Residents of the densely populated slum were also asked if they could identify anyone from the sketch released by the police.

But residents are sceptical about the operation. Rehan, a local, said, “If the key indeed belongs to the killer, it is most likely that he would have changed the lock by now. We don’t think this will help, as the accused has been able to evade arrest even after committing three crimes despite so many measures being taken.”

Apart from the key, the police also found a two-rupee coin near Nusrat’s body. Fingerprints on the coin have been sent for analysis to determine if they belong to the girl or the culprit. The police have also questioned locksmiths in the area to learn if they had made a duplicate key for the lock on the shanty in which Nusrat’s body was dumped.

The pressure built on Nehru Nagar police station officials by regular visits of senior officers like police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal, several joint commissioners of police, politicians and the media has ensured that investigations are being carried out at a frenzied pace.

A senior police officer said, “Other than a special squad, officers with a track record of solving such cases have also been roped in.” He added that evidence found in the earlier two cases is being matched with this one, which could help provide more leads.
What has made police’s work harder though is that owners of many shanties in area have gone to their native places. Nusrat’s uncle, Ismayeel, said, “Other than areas like the Alidada

Compound and Vatsala Tai Nagar, the police should also conduct checks in slums and shanties located near the railway tracks.”
