Why the ‘G’ word scares policemen

Guns, grenades, gangsters. If you thought the police lose sleep at the prospect of dealing with these three Gs, you couldn’t be more wrong. What worries them most is the thought of being transferred to Gadchiroli, a Maoist-infested area in the southeastern corner of Maharashtra.

The area is infamous for attacks on the police by the rebels. No wonder then, that a police inspector from Bandra preferred diluting his findings in a case after a conman, who claimed to be NCP leader Sachin Ahir’s secretary, threatened to transfer him to Gadchiroli by using his ‘influence’.

According to police sources, the incident took place recently when the inspector was dealing with a congnisible offence and came across one T Nair. The cop had conducted a preliminary investigation into the case and was about to initiate action when Nair began boasting about his contacts. He claimed he was Ahir’s secretary and also close to other bigwigs.

So far, the inspector appeared least bothered about the Santa Cruz resident’s claims. However, the moment the conman warned the cop that he would be sent to Gadchiroli if he did not toe his line, the inspector developed cold feet. “He got so tense that he diluted the results of his findings,” sources said.

A high-level inquiry has been initiated into the matter. Ironically, Nair is not even remotely connected to Ahir. He is someone who keeps dropping big names in an attempt to gain credibility and earn favours.

Nair is known to have even gained mileage by talking about his ‘association’ with Rahul Gandhi. He has even tried to get flats in Mhada buildings using Gandhi’s name.  Nair has been arrested by the Vakola police in a cheating case.
