Pune and Mumbai can look forward to a wet weekend with occasional rain or showers forecast for the next 48 hours by the Indian Meteorological department (IMD).

According to IMD’s director (weather forecasting) Medha Khole, the low pressure area (LPA) which had moved away from the Maharashtra coast a few days ago was fast approaching the coast. Khole said, “After Mumbai and Pune recorded zero rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, we have had rain in the last two days. This is because of the movement of the LPA towards the coast. We can certainly expect a wet weekend in Pune and Mumbai with occasional rain and showers in the next 48 hours.”

However, Khole said that there was no advancement of the monsoon beyond Dahanu in the Thane district after June 5. “The monsoon has not yet entered Gujarat,” Khole said.

According to Khole, the monsoon is expected to advance into North East India and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim in the next two days. She also said that central India would be covered by the monsoon by the middle of next week.

In the next 48 hours, Khole said that Kerala, Karnataka and Goa would get widespread rainfall and in isolated places it would be heavy to very heavy.

In Maharashtra, there will be fairly widespread rainfall in South Madhya Maharashtra, while Vidarbha and Marathawada would receive scattered rainfall.
