While the ongoing cold spell is expected to run for another day or two, the meteorological department has predicted a similar streak in the ensuing week, thanks to western disturbances hitting northern India. Though temperatures may not dip as low as Thursday’s 8.8 degrees Celsius — a four-year low for February — Mumbaikars can expect yet another cool spell to hit them next week, officials confirmed.

Stating that the temperature was expected to return to normal in a day or two,  meteorological department director VK Rajeev said, “Although the city experienced its coldest February morning in four years on Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded for the day was a degree or so higher than that on Wednesday.”

Normal temperature for Mumbai is considered to be around 31 degree Celsius as maximum and 19 degree Celsius as minimum. At Santa Cruz, maximum temperature reported was 28 degree Celsius, while Colaba recorded 26.5 degrees and 14.2 degrees Celsius as the highest and lowest temperatures respectively. Relative humidity (RH) was measured as 27% (Santa Cruz) and 31% (Colaba) at 2:30pm, when a day’s temperature is considered to be highest.

Reiterating the reason behind the record dip in temperature, the director said, “The western disturbances continue to hit northern region of the country, where snowfall was reported in some parts. The cold wave flowing from north has been hitting Mumbai for the past few days causing the drop in temperature. The temperature is likely to increase tomorrow (Friday) though.”

In February 2008, Santa Cruz registered 8.5 degree Celsius temperature, while on Wednesday; mercury touched 14.2 degree Celsius, beating the previous year low of 14.9 degree Celsius.
The all-time low temperature for Mumbai was registered on January 22, 1962 when mercury had touched 7.9 degree Celsius.

On Friday, the temperature is forecast to be as high as 28 degree Celsius and at minimum of 11 degrees Celsius.
