Gujarat had appealed to the Union ministry of railways to shift the Western Railway’s headquarters from Churchgate to Ahmedabad.
An official said the issue was also raised in the Parliament and discussed during the question hour in the Lok Sabha where minister of state for railways KH Muniyappa said the railways did not find the proposal feasible.
“Gujarat requested shifting of Western Railway (WR) headquarters to Ahmedabad in view of the huge contribution from the state to the Western Railway,” said the official.
Besides running the Mumbai suburban and outstation trains in Maharashtra, the Western Railway serves Gujarat, parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The ministry gave a detailed explanation, saying that the location of the headquarters depends on operational and administrative needs consistent with the needs of economy and efficiency. “And the proposal was examined with respect to these facts,” it said.
