The engineering college has landed itself in yet another controversy. On Wednesday, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) activists staged a protest at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) at Matunga after it was reported that the institute has allegedly rented out two grounds in its 16-acre campus for a wedding and that many students were allegedly vacated from their hostel rooms for the function.

However, the college said that they had given permission for a “corporate function”. But once they found out that it was a wedding, a committee appointed to look into the matter rejected the application.

Students had called the MNVS activists after around 100 students were forced to vacate their rooms despite their on going exams. A student form the C block who does not wished to be named said, “We were told to vacate our rooms on the pretext of accommodation for some conference. We later found out that the rooms were made vacant for a wedding in the campus.”

MNS activists had a meeting with the the members and requested them to look at the students interest. “It is an educational institute and not a commercial place where such things should be permitted. If they do not call of the reception we will revolt,” said Sainath Durge, member of the student wing of MNS.

In a press release, the director’s office has clarified that hostel rooms were vacated for an academic function which will be held 23 May, 2011 as a part of post centenary silver jubilee celebrations of VJTI.

“Hostels are often made available to host guests and participants arriving at seminars, conferences and other academic activities. The examination schedule in no way will affect the hosting of such activity. No hostel rooms have never been made available for marriage or any other functions other than academics.”

According to the dean of student’s affair Navdeep Singh, a pharmaceutical company and a catering company had approached VJTI for a corporate event and so the college gave a go ahead for the event. “On 19th April we got to know that the company needs space for a wedding.”
