State transport minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil has directed the transport commissionerate to act against the auto drivers who participated in the strike on Tuesday without prior notice.

He has also asked the commissionerate to pull up the union leaders who led the strike.

The minister asked the department to check on the legality of the whole issue, and if the leaders could be arrested and their licenses suspended.

Vikhe Patil on Wednesday also took transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav to task for the department’s inefficiency. He said that it was the transport commissionerate that had let down the government in the eyes of the general public.

“I had informed you about the auto strike on Tuesday. Even 24 hours after my orders, there was no action taken against the errant autos and their leaders. These people held Mumbaikars to ransom,” he told the commissioner over the phone.

The minister had also ordered the transport commissioner to submit an ‘action taken’ report about the taxis and the unions that had prompted the auto and taxi strike on June 22.

Nitesh Rane-led Swabhiman Sanghtana was behind that strike, when many taxis had been damaged. The minister also has directed the commissionerate to recover the losses.
