The state can now look forward to the first rehabilitation centre and a 240-bed tertiary care hospital for the mentally ill.

The state government on Friday wrote to the Union government promising that it would take care of the financial needs of the centre and the hospital from the sixth year of its existence.

The Rs-30 crore project, funded by the Centre, was hanging fire for the last two years since it wanted a written commitment from the state government that after five years it would cater to the financial needs of the centre and the hospital. The Union government had set March 31 as the deadline for the state government.

The secretary of the directorate of medical education and research, Milind Mhaiskar, confirmed to DNA that the written assurance to Union government has been despatched.

“We have agreed to abide by all the clauses of the central government. We have also given a commitment to the Centre to bear all the costs of the project, including the establishment cost, after five years,” he said.

Under the project, the rehabilitation centre has been planned in Vishrantwadi and the hospital in Pashan. Even the Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health (MIMH) had zeroed in on the land at both these locations.

The MIMH officials have been pursuing the issue with the state government to ensure that the commitment is sent to the Union government before the end of the financial year.

Dr Alka Pawar, director of MIMH told DNA that the correspondence between the Centre and the state government on this issue has been going on for about two years.

“We would have lost the project if the state government had failed to send its written assurance,” she added.

She said, “The plan includes the construction of the hospital in Pashan, an auditorium and manpower training. The rehab centre for cured mentally ill patients is supposed to come up in Vishrantwadi.”
