The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to ensure water supply to the city till August 31, considering the storage in the four dams of the Khadakwasla system that supply water to the city.

Superintending engineer VG Kulkarni informed reporters recently the water storage would be monitored closely from June 14 and necessary changes made in quantity supplied, if the monsoon is delayed.

He said considering the delay in arrival of monsoon in the last two years, the civic body has prepared a contingency plan by which wells and borewells would be used for water supply.

He said the PMC has desilted wells through private contractors over the last two years. It has a database of wells and borewells, the availability of water and whether it is potable.

If the monsoon fails, the civic administration would take over all these sources of water to ensure supply to the city.

The water resources department, which controls the four dams of the Khadakwasla system — Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon and Temghar — usually plans out the storage in the dams to ensure water supply till July 15.

By then the water levels in the dams rise again due to fresh inflow of water with the monsoon rains. But for the last two years, there were problems in water supply as the monsoon was delayed.
