Puneites will have to wait a little longer too see city’s own ‘Café Leopold’ to start again.

It’s been almost two years since the blast at German Bakery, and its second generation owner has been forced to put off the plans to reopen the bakery on or before February 13 due to “unavoidable reasons”.

Snehal Kharose, while speaking to DNA, said, “I had plans to reopen the bakery on or before February 13, the day the bakery was razed in 2010. However, now when the day is just a week ahead, we are nowhere near completion. Unfortunately, the restoration work is still going on and that has forced us keep the bakery shut for a little longer.”

The iconic bakery, situated in Koregaon Park, was bombed on February 13, 2010, in which 17 people died and 64 were injured. The bomb blast had shocked not only Pune, but the entire country.
The powerful blast had ripped the bakery with holes in the wall, not to mention the extensive damage to the furniture.

Kharose said, “I have changed the design of the bakery and when it will be reopened, the patrons will have a totally new layout. The bakery will have two storeys, an area of 750 sq feet on the ground floor and 1,100 sq feet area on the first floor.”

“Besides, we are facing a lot of hurdles in procuring the machinery to be installed at the bakery. Moreover, we are left crippled with no staff members at all. The staff that worked with the bakery is gone and we need to recruit new workers,” she said.

“Apart from me and my mother, Smita Kharose, there is no one to look after the work of the bakery. Due to the lack of manpower, we are not been able to speed up the renovation work,” Snehal added.

Although she is hopeful to reopen the bakery in a month, the memories of February 13, 2010, still haunts her. “February 13 is a black day. The bomb blast in the bakery has shattered us completely. My family is working very hard to reopen the bakery. But our family does not have a strong support base. It is only me and my mother Smita who have been running around,” Snehal said.

“Since we find the memories of the incident painful, I am not going to arrange any event at the bakery on that day. But, once the construction of the bakery is complete, we will inaugurate it on any auspicious day that is suitable,” she added.
