Voting is going to be hassle-free this year.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is making all efforts to ensure that more than one crore, two lakh voters cast their vote on February 16 without any difficulty.

On Monday, municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar announced that the BMC has started its SMS facility. You can now locate your polling centre by sending an SMS (see box).

For 227 councillors seats in 24 administrative wards in the city which stretches from Dahisar -Kandarpada - IC Colony (ward number 1) to RC Church-Colaba-Navynagar (ward number 227), the BMC has finalised 2009 locations for polling centres with 8,395 polling booths.

“We tried to place the polling centres in such a way so that we can reach out to more people. We had also requested 150 residential societies to allow us to keep the polling centres on their premises. Only 28 have responded positively,” said Kumar.

This time, the BMC has reduced the number of non-ground floor polling booths without lifts to 28 from 1,666 in 2007. As per the directions of state election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan, the Mumbai police are drawing up a security arrangement plan for the polling day.

Though Kumar did not give details of sensitive locations, he said that “The voters’ lists have been sent to the Mumbai police to identify sensitive polling site locations. Out of the 6,000 polling sites in the 2007 elections, 211 were marked sensitive and had additional security. With the number of booths soaring to 8,395 across 2009 sites this year, the number of sensitive booths will also rise. The final list of polling booths and their locations will be declared on February 4”.

The BMC has appointed 29 returning officers. “Due to a rise in the number of polling centres this year, we have asked the election commission to provide 11,000 electronic voting machines so that less number of people have to wait in queues,” said Kumar.
