Here is a classic case of how apathy of the citizenry towards casting votes results in criminalisation of politics.

Udaykant Andekar (44), who has 17 criminal cases against him, including a murder, two attempted murders and molestation, has been elected to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) despite 30% of the voters in Doke Talim Sangh panel not wanting him to represent them.

The total number of votes cast in the panel is 30,608. Of them, 17,148 people voted which made the polling percentage of 30%. NCP’s Andekar got only 8,040 votes, which means only 26% voters wanted him to represent them.

He got elected as the remaining votes got distributed and many didn’t turn up to vote. He was externed from Pune twice, in 1994 and in 2009.
