The sessions court on Friday rejected stockbroker Gautam Vora’s bail plea filed by his counsel last week on the grounds that “the case is at a crucial stage of investigation” and that “the section under which Vora is booked (section 225 IPC) is non-bailable offence”. Vora is under arrest for allegedly sheltering Vijay Palande, the mastermind in the Arun Tikku and Karan Kakkar murder cases, after the latter fled from police custody on April 10.

While arguing the case, Vora’s counsel advocate Rajendra Sorankar said, “It is a fact that Vora knew Palande since the past two years, but he knew his as Karan Sood, the cousin of the model Simran Sood.” Stating that Vora has been supporting the crime branch in their probe whenever they required him, Sorankar said, “Had Vora known about Palande’s background, he wouldn’t have used his credit card to pay his hotel bills.”

Public prosecutor advocate Nilima Kasture, however, said, “On the night when Palande escaped from custody, he and Vora were together for nearly three to four hours. How can the prosecution rule out the possibility of Palande not telling Vora about his escape from the clutches of police?”

The prosecution also added that a witness who had seen Vora and Palande together in the hotel has identified Vora in the identification parade and also the details of BBM messages exchanges exchanged between the two must be probed. Stating that Vora belonged to an influential class of society, the prosecution reasoned that “if released on bail, he may try to tamper with witnesses in the case”.

Meanwhile, Simran Sood was produced before the Esplanade Court on Friday and was remanded to the police custody till May 8. Simran, who was earlier arrested by the police for her allegedly involvement in the Kakkar case, is presently under the police custody for Tikku murder case.
