If you’ve ever asked yourself ‘what am I doing to help the world?’ then this one’s for you. Patrick Triano, director of training and member support AmeriCorps at the Corporation for National and Community Service, was in the city recently to speak to youth about volunteerism. Triano is director of the US training programme where youth volunteer for national service. Around 10,000 youngsters are part of AmeriCorps and do community service for at least a year.
He says, “The success of volunteerism will lie in blurring the lines between people who give and get. The ones who get will have to be made partners so that there is comfort.”
To promote volunteerism in India, Triano says, “You need to teach youngsters through schools and colleges. Their professional, compassionate, and spiritual sides need to be redressed so that they can be more effective while they participate in community service. They need to be given benefits and scholarships for community service.”
