A handful of students who came to attend an annual institute festival landed up with job offers with two leading firms, at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Matunga.

The students were expected to find solutions to real-life problems faced in industries, in 72 hours. A couple of teams not only have successfully solved the problems, but have also managed to impress the industry representatives with their skills.

Around 21 corporates participated in the Young Innovators’ Choice Competition (YICC) with problems faced in their respective industries.

The problems given to them varied from finding treatment for gastro-esophageal reflux disease, capturing the energy from waste heat, reusing treated effluent water as makeup water for cooling tower, etc.

All corporates had announced prizes varying from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000 for the best and the second best solutions.

GD Yadav, ICT director, said, “This particular event was designed by the students for the students. Since we give only 72 hours to find solutions to real-life problems, students were on it for three days. They ate and slept on the lawns, corridors, or wherever they were working. We provided them with internet and access to our digital library for help on their projects. They were provided with international journals to books and mentors — PhD students of the ICT guiding them. Most of the companies who were on campus have appreciated their efforts.”
