Vilasrao Deshmukh is worth Rs13.58 crore, if the assets declared by the former Maharashtra CM and union cabinet minister while filing the nomination for Rajya Sabha (RS) elections, are to be believed.

Interestingly, assets declared by Vilasrao and his wife in July 2009 — when he first got elected to RS — was Rs5.92 crore, which means the assets have more than doubled in less than three years. Also, neither Vilasrao nor his wife owns a car.

But surprises don’t stop there. Pune-based infrastructure development industrialist and independent candidate Sanjay Kakade is worth a whopping Rs 491 crore, and probably the richest among the candidates in the fray for the RS elections. Vilasrao, then, is 35 times poorer than Kakade.

According to the affidavit filed by Vilasrao with the nomination, the gross total of movable properties owned by him and his wife — including cash in hand, cash in bank accounts and investments in shares, debentures, jewellery — is worth Rs 7.11 crore.

The immovable properties are worth Rs5.54 crore, while his wife Vaishali owns additional immovable property worth Rs 93.85 lakh. This includes agricultural land the family owns at Babhalgaon in Latur and two flats, including a 950 sq ft flat costing Rs2.13 crore at Worli.

Kakade’s immovable property, on the other hand, is worth Rs160.94 crore, while his movable property is worth Rs330.55 crore.
