Two teenage college students were crushed to death inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivli, after being hit by a speeding car hired by the police for election duty on Wednesday.
The driver of the Tavera car, Sunil Aangne, 50, has been charged with rash and negligent driving resulting in death.
According to records available with Kasturba Marg police station in Borivli, the deceased, Vinod Sachin Kashi, 19, and Akshay Ashok Kadam, 18, were visiting Kanheri Caves with six other friends.
Officials said that while the rest of the friends stood at the gate, the duo headed out for a ride. While Akshay was manning the bike, Vinod sat on the pillion. Witnesses told the police that Akshay was riding at a dangerously high speed when the bike hit the Tavera coming from the opposite direction.
The impact of the collision caused the bike to skid to a great distance. The injured teenagers started bleeding profusely. They were later rushed to Bhagwati civic hospital in Borivli, where they were declared dead before admission.
Mitesh Gurav, a friend of the deceased, in his statement to the police said that they had gone to the caves at around 1pm and were returning home when the incident happened. The police have informed the deceased’s parents about the incident. While Vinod studied in SYBCom, Akshay was in his final years of BCom.
